The original port of Blyth dates from the 12th century, but the development of the modern Blyth only really began in the 18th century.
The main industries which helped the town prosper at this time were coal mining and shipbuilding. These industries have largely vanished, but the port still thrives, shipping paper and pulp from Scandinavia for the newspaper industries of England and Scotland.
The quayside has been redeveloped and includes the 15 metre Spirit of the Staithes sculpture which was created in 2003 by the artist Simon Packard.
The Blyth Harbour Wind Farm was constructed on and along the East Pier in 1992. A further three turbines have been added to create an additional offshore wind farm.
