An important port until the harbour silted up in the early 1800's. Situated on the River Aln, it is popular for golf (with two links courses) and for leisure boating enthusiasts.
Stong currents make the beach area around the river mouth dangerous for bathers but there is a 3 mile stretch of sand and grassy dunes towards the south of the town for the usual beach activities.
