The town of Rochester is known for its cathedral, and its castle with enormous Norman tower-keep built around 1127 to guard the river crossing. The castle was scene of a siege in 1215 where rebel barons resisted King John for nearly two months.
The town has a number of historically important buildings, including the Guildhall, the Corn Exchange, and Eastgate House. The town has an association with Charles Dickens who lived nearby and based many of his novels in the Rochester area.
